saw leon going on about love on his blog so thought i would give my 10 cents on the matter - my 2 cents is free. so sit back and enjoy, folks
love is a four-letter word, and like most other words of its ilk, love has a reputation that precedes it. it is discussed before it is experienced, dissected and analysed yet all the thoughts fly out the window when the purple haze of 'love' descends. however, this begs the question of whether love is an emotion that comes upon you, or is it something that comes about from giving, through the act of self-sacrifice for the sake of someone else, often for intangible reasons?
more often that not, the feeling which you accusingly point the finger to as love is actually mere infatuation. you do not feel for that special person per se, but you are enamoured by the idea and concept for caring for someone. you in effect 'in love with being in love'. it begins with attraction and seldom proceeds further than that. you are attracted but that is all. because if you scratch below the surface, all you will find are shallow feelings. do you really care deep down inside? bear in mind that the idealistic vision of love is one that is often deemed irrational, the only case where self-sacrifice can be chosen over self-gain.
of course, there are instances where you really like someone because of who they are, and not merely due to physical attraction. however, not to play devil's advocate, but its hard to get to know someone within the span of a few years or months. a person is much too complicated to be fully assessed and considered in such a short time. the point i'm driving at is lack of information. you won't know enough of the person. they may be nice/caring/sweet/charming but surely that would just be the tip of the iceberg. give it time before you entrust your feelings to someone
alright, i'm sure alot of y'all may have experienced a sharp twingey-kinda feeling somewhere in your chest cavity, around the centre, a little bit to the left? Yup you've just experienced a short but intense jolt to the heart. (either that or you've on the receiving end of a heart attack, which won't be pretty) your body was full of emotion, and once triggered by something ( a thought, voice or image perhaps) it manifests itself through a strong surge of endorphins (the feel good hormone) and you feel like you're walking amongst the clouds. i'm quite sure that this is felt with true love, but it doesn't necessarily signal the presence of love in the air. as said earlier, attraction is an awesomely powerful emotion and attraction can be the cause of experiencing said feelings above. the feeling is shiok to say the least, hence people are unlikely to question it much and they'd just 'go with the flow' and enjoy the rush that they get. but beware. love would involve your head, your mind & heart. attraction would normally involve, err...other parts of the anatomy. perhaps it can be said that attraction is simply love minus all the messy emo mental shebang.
ok this is by no means a definitive and exhaustive resource on love. take things with a large dose of salt because none of the views here are guaranteed to be coherent, cogent or even correct. consider them at your own risk haha

where'd you go
where'd you go
i miss you so
seems like its been forever since you've been gone
please
come back home
1. i found fluffy!
now safely residing in a locker
easily accessible whenever we need to play ball
2. the long weekend beckons. have fun kids. use it to unwind if you've been uptight, rest if you're unwell and recover if you're afflicted by sianness. its a good excuse to whip out the wallets and be generous to both yourself and others. and lastly, dressing up gives me a reason to go out :)

i found a new best friend today. he/she/it is called fluffy, and we had so much fun together. the 4 hours we spent together, shall reside in the depths of my mind forever and ever, cherished but never forgotten. i'm so sorry you had to roll into the drain filled with algae-infested water, and have green gunk all over your spherical shape, but nevertheless we still enjoyed a special connection, man-and-ball fused together as one, moving with purpose and direction. hope we can meet again one day
sincerely,
daryl

I’m finding my own words, my own little stage
My own epic drama, my own scripted page
i'm at peace with myself, with the world, & with everything. let it stay this way and it'll just make my day.

flag day
Sunday, April 23, 2006
i did my first flag day yesterday and it was quite interesting. after spending my whole life till then watching volunteers pounding the streets seeking to sell flags, i was finally able to put myself in their shoes ( albeit that my shoes are much nicer ) . well i can conclude that there are several types of people based on my experience:
the LJB type
this species makes its intention to NOT donate known very obviously through use of a strange facial expression which can be read from a mile away. do not even bother to approach
the diao type
does not display an LJB at first glance, but upon being asked to donate, this particular type will stare at the tin/bag you are clutching and read the name of the organisation you are selling flags for. often they will not make eye contact and continue walking without missing a step.
well there's the stereotypical singaporean for you. but don't worry there are still kind souls out there, the people who stop to donate when asked or at least politely decline when asked. I agree with srini that the best kind has to be those that approach you voluntarily. srini spent most of his time just standing on the sidewalk trying to look pitiful while i tried the active route of approaching people. guess who got more money in the end haha. hint: guess who looks like he needs the money to climb outta poverty :p

haven't been blogging much recently. blame it on a lack of time, blame it on a lack of motivation. heck, just blame it on me.
as you can tell this is gonna be one of hock's philosophical posts on life and his reflective musings. henceforth you shall be taking a peek into my mind and the weird odd happenings inside. enjoy your trip.
what is the meaning of life? well it depends on your definition of life itself. viewed in the context of being a student, life = school. school = boring. therefore life = boring. actually boring would be too placid a term. how bout i present to you some other adjectives like mundane, tiring and dreary? or even meaningless and depressing. in fact, the worst feeling to have is a sensation so weird that you can be feeling all sorts of negativity at one moment, and the next instant all that sensation has disappeared, but the lingering shadow it leaves behind still clings to you, dampening your mood.
man that paragraph was mighty depressing. don't worry, life hasn't been that horrible. there is still good stuff, like watching damien and his 1001 impersonations, and just being able to have friends around ya. but still, that sian feeling is never far away. maybe its because of the weather. maybe it because of some strange alignment of the stars. i can imagine some psychic astronomer going 'venus is in its 3rd phase and is at right angles to the left hemisphere of the sirius nebula so you will be in a shitty mood' or something like that.
personally i can guess some of the reasons behind this gloom of doom (that rhymes) thats hanging over us. the teachers weren't kidding when they said term 2 was gonna be hectic. its as hectic as rush-hour madness in New York, multiplied by 100. and you can square that too. work keeps coming and never stops. i'm not at breaking point, but at this rate we're going, i'm steadily marching down a road to exhaustion.
on another note, i saw a rainbow today. brought back some nice memories. guess its a good sign that there's still cheer in this world. hope it will get me back to my usual self. once i get all this dreary emo junk outta my head i'll be the good ol happy-go-lucky dude again. for now, sine mood curve is minimum, there is a prolonged recession in the emotional economy, and equilibrium has shifted to the dreary side of the reaction. yucks... i think i need to lay off the work for awhile haha

the day before yesterday: slacked did my usual thang
the day before today:slacked again with the usual stuff
today: did not slack. seems like i'm running on shell v-power 98 formula scuderia unleaded ultra 100% proof 24 karat turbo work juice or something. my sine mood curve is at a maximum now. i feel invincible. throw anything at me and i can handle it. please let this mood last forever and ever and ever and ever. call it a work-induced high or whatever, i'm doing just good

I don't always get what I want. No one does. Its an unchangeable fact of life that can be set in stone and it will remain that way for eternity. When life throws a curveball at you, the initial disappointment can be stunning and it will linger on, but to hang on to such feelings is pointless and detrimental to oneself. Best to pick yourself up and forge ahead. In any case I am not judged by others but by my Maker Himself. To stay disillusioned would be disrespect to the trust that He has placed upon me. It would be akin to a thumb to the face to my friends who believe in me no matter the outcome. Hence i keep going. There is no point in starting a race only to stop halfway for all the effort you put in would come to nought. At the end of it all, I want to be able to say proudly
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" 2 timothy 4:7

ever typed something really long and then just deleted it cos you didn't feel like saying it anymore? well yeah i just conjured up a paragraph of full of feeling and expression that i promptly read and deleted cos it just sounded pathetic and self-pitying. after thinking for awhile, here's the calmer, more detached summary of what's on my mind
1. i've got a problem
2. problem is mainly caused by overactivity in my brain over something
3. the only one who is affected by this would hence probably be me
4. now that i know i'm causing myself unnecessary grief, i shall solve it
5. easier said than done, cos logic never was easily applied to matters like emotion

found an old pair of ds trainers at the grandstand today. they were old and gold with holes. but still good to run in :) whoever used them to play soccer in, shame on you... wasting such a good shoe and ripping it to shreds. thankfully it still held together on the track.
the swim team got invited to the mgs invitational swim meet! its quite late already and the invitation hadn't arrived for some time so i thought that we weren't gonna be invited. that would mean i've got no race to swim in 'cept for Nationals..which is like an eternity away in July. soccer and table tennis nationals are underway...hockey is at the end of the month and track's been having competitions almost every week. with the mgs meet at least i can get busy and down to business instead of watching by the sidelines doin nothin
